Turaco Song

from Wormholes by Bateau Ivre

/

lyrics

while I'm stepping over rotten logs sweating while I walk in the morning fog after a night of thunder and rain

while I get stuck knee-deep in the mud after being visited by river hogs trying hard not to go insane
while I recover from wasp sting shocks trying to dry my encrusted socks and the constant buzzing of the bees confounds my brain

my thoughts they run to you

does your alarm wake you up for a hot shower and coffee cup
while you're still rubbing the sleep away?

do you check your mailbox when somebody knocks and talks
while you pick your clothes for the day?

do you drive to the grocery shop singing along to French 80s pop
that the car radio plays?

I still haven't heard from you

and I wonder what you do

the world outside becomes a myth
with no news no voice no smiles no breath

does life really go on without me?

while I become a mindless wreck
that sweet fragrance rises from your neck
as your feet carry you through the streets

while I walk home with elephants around and I'm making a lot of sound to scare them away

while I swallow my malaria pill tired from climbing all these hills
and my feet itch from being bitten a billion times a day

while the clouds close over a sand so still my beard grows
into an unattractive frill and the fallen flowers on the path decay

my thoughts they run to you

are you enjoying a Sunday spent watering the garden plants
and getting a little bit tanned in the early summer afternoon light?

are you chatting while you stand by the Joan of Arc monument
making plans to go out with friends to your favourite bar tonight?
are you joking with a glass of wine in your hand to the sound of the band before making your way home happy and tired?

wherever it is that you go

in my mind I'm there with you

the world outside becomes a myth
with no news no voice no smiles no breath
does life really go on without me?

the world outside is not a myth
there’s your touch your voice your smiles your breath
and with you is where I want to be.
